Research Proposal I've had many ideas about what to research for my research project, but I have settled on researching Effective Public Fundraising. I aim to discover what I need to do to fundraising privately, effectively. I chose to do research in this area as I have always been interested in giving something more back to the community other than what I do already. I have had little or no previous background in public fundraising other than observations and participation in community fundraising events so Public Fundraising is entirely new to me.
My research methods will include: interviews and surveys of randomly selected community members about their most preferred social issue and/or charity which they would like fundraising for; direct communication with charities and other organisations in order to complete my end goal; and finally my end goal is to personally go out and fundraise for the charity and/or social issue which was most preferred in my surveys and interviews. I will hopefully do this by dressing up in a costume (hopefully relating to my chosen charity, or a child friendly costume) and walk around attempting to raise funds by offering hugs, etc. with appropriate signage signifying my attempts to raise funds and awareness. I will also be utilizing my position in the school as School Captain and organise school based events with the SRC (Student Representative Council) to raise funds and awareness for other social issues and/or charities. For example: I will attempt to organise the school’s participation in The World’s Greatest Shave which raises awareness and funds for Leukaemia Foundation.
As will all research, there are many ethical concerns. Namely, I will need to have informed consent from my interviewees and survey takers. To achieve informed consent, I will need to construct a letter which explains what I am doing and why and furthermore ask their permission for their responses to be used in my presentations. However, I must also accept that the people that I have asked have the right to decline or opt out of my research at any time. I must also ensure that I do not harm anyone, including myself. This includes emotional harm, as some people may be offended or little kids may develop a fear of my costume! Ultimately, I must also ensure that all of my research (including the practical based private fundraising) is beneficial to my end goal.
My chosen capability is Citizenship. My research topic of Public Fundraising is all to do with communicating with the community and identifying relevant political, social and environmental issues and ultimately exploring ways to contribute to the community using my findings. I will need to contact charities and experts in the appropriate fields in order to complete my research and also to communicate directly with the SRC regarding school based fundraising events. I also to learn and understand how to work with different people, resulting in the most efficient Public Fundraising. Furthermore, I hope to express the importance of fundraising to all in the community.
