This week I realised that I am fairly behind compared to the rest of my class. I have organised what I need to do and have planned out exactly what I need to do, but I actually need to start my work. According to my learning style, my planning is usually more time consuming that the actual writing so I will be able to catch up with the work easily.

1. What was the highlight of your research so far that you have enjoyed the most?
I have enjoyed the communication with people in the composing industry. This has also given me an opportunity for me to send them my scores and get their opinions on it, which has resulted in my gaining much more knowledge and experience in score writing. For example, after communications with Paul-Antoni Bonetti I have changed my standard orchestral instrumentation from a three wind orchestra with euphonium and other instruments which I thought were common but weren't to an instrumentation as follows:

Piccolo
Flute 1
Flute 2
Oboe 1
Oboe 2
Cor Anglais/Oboe 3
Clarinet 1
Clarinet 2
Bass Clarinet/Clarinet 3
Bassoon 1
Bassoon 2
Contrabassoon/Bassoon 3
-
Horn 1-4
Trumpet 1-3
Trombone 1+2
Bass Trombone
Tuba
-
Percussion
-
Harp
Violin I
Violin II
Viola
Violoncello
Double Bass

However, I have also learned new ways of instrumentation to create different orchestral colours with a two wind orchestra, such as the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra which my piece, Allegro Animato is being played by. In short, My instrumentation has now changed to a two wind orchestra as follows, however if the need shall arise during my piece I shall change to a three wind orchestra.

Flute 1
Flute 2/Piccolo
Oboe 1
Oboe 2/Cor Anglais
Clarinet 1
Clarinet 2/Bass Clarinet
Bassoon 1
Bassoon 2/Contrabassoon
-
Horn 1-4
Trumpet 1-3
Trombone 1+2
Bass Trombone
Tuba
-
Percussion
-
Harp
Violin I
Violin II
Viola
Violoncello
Double Bass

2. What were some of your challenges or difficult situations/ problems that you have encountered in your research and how did you overcome them?
A major obvious challenge in my research is the fact that after nine weeks I was told that I need to start again, putting me nine weeks behind the rest of the class. I have overcome this by planning ahead my research and what I need to do, but also by choosing something which I have a good background knowledge in (general music knowledge), however not in the field which I am researching (film score composing). This will prove beneficial in the future as I aspire to be a Film Score Composer.

3. What did you find interesting that you did not know so far?
Something interesting I discovered was what I outlined in Question 1. As mentioned, I also found out that my use of Euphonium in an orchestra was actually uncommon so I have adjusted my scores accordingly and will benefit me in future compositions. I have also discovered the more industry wide composition technology and knowledge prerequisits, for example knowledge of producing software such as Sonar, which I do not have. I have also found out more about what is required in a folio which potential film scorers present to a film director.
